6 Ways to Celebrate Thanksgiving in Massachusetts

By Dining, Food for thought, Seasonal, Uncategorized

Thanksgiving is one of the most underrated American holidays. After all, there’s no Thanksgiving tree, buying presents for loved ones, or dressing up in silly costumes for this holiday. However, Thanksgiving is the very best for spending time with friends and family, and also eating some yummy food! In Massachusetts, there are so many exciting celebrations happening, as well. Here are six ideas on how you can celebrate your Thanksgiving in Massachusetts!

  1. Check out the Thanksgiving parade in Plymouth, MA

To get the most out of your Massachusetts Thanksgiving festivities, head to Plymouth the Saturday before the big day. America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Parade kicks off at Benny’s Plaza. This parade includes military bands, a fife, drum and bugle corps, beautiful handmade floats, and more.

  1. Sign up for the Turkey Trot in Norwood, MA

To get in shape for that big Thanksgiving feast, consider signing up for the Norwood Turkey Trot and run. There’s a fun run for the kids, too! Get out and enjoy your community at this wonderful annual event.

  1. Donate to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank in Lowell, MA

You may donate canned or boxed food or may make a monetary donation instead. Help make Thanksgiving a day of feasting and celebrating for those who might not be able to afford it otherwise.

  1. Detour to Duxbury, MA to visit Bongi’s Turkey Roost

Bongi’s Turkey Roost will sell you a farm fresh raw turkey or you can buy it already roasted and ready to warm up on Thanksgiving Day.

  1. Help others with Boston Cares in Boston, MA

Head into Boston for countless volunteer opportunities in the days before Thanksgiving or even on Thanksgiving Day. Help fill bags and boxes at soup kitchens, deliver groceries to needy families or serve our veterans Thanksgiving Dinner. Boston Cares will help match you with the appropriate volunteer opportunity that meets your schedule.

  1. Do some Black Friday shopping at Kingston Collection in Kingston, MA

This sprawling mall is guaranteed to have a store where you can find a holiday gift for every member of the family!

If you still need to cross some items off your Christmas shopping list, check out our items at FishAye!

Tips for Storing Your Boat in the Colder Months

By Boating, Fishing, Seasonal, Uncategorized

October is when the weather turns chilly in Massachusetts, so that means it’s time to start thinking about storing your boat until next season! It’s essential that you know how to store your boat properly so you don’t have any surprise damage next spring. Follow these simple tips to get your boat ready for winter!

  1. Run your boat once more. Pay attention to any issues that may need repair or replacement over the winter, especially with regards to the engine.
  2. Drain your boat. Remove the boat from the water and drain the bilge, water tanks, head, pipes and seacocks. Raise the bow to accelerate drainage if possible.
  3. Clean your boat. Thoroughly scrub the entirety of the boat with soap and water, from the hull to the interior. Remove any plant life and barnacles that have attached to the hull. Open any lockers, drawers, refrigerators and freezers and clean as well.
  4. Lubricate moving parts. Grease the steering system and control mechanisms. Lightly apply moisture-displacing lubricant on all moving metal parts such as hinges, latches and linkages.
  5. Remove and charge the battery. Take out the battery and completely charge it. Clean the battery terminals and lightly coat them with grease. Do the same for the battery cable ends. Store the battery in a warm, dry place, noting that you will not place it back into the boat until the spring.
  6. Remove sensitive materials. Anything and everything that does not form part of the vessel should be removed and stored away, including life jackets, fire extinguishers and flares. If the interior of the boat is fitted with organic materials such as fabric and leather, remove these as well to prevent mildew deposits.
  7. Seal exhaust ports. If your boat employs exhaust ports, seal them with duct tape to prevent pests from entering and clogging these components.
  8. Cover and store your boat. Protect your boat with a cover that can withstand even the most brutal weather episodes. For harsher environments, consider shrink-wrapping your boat to provide additional protection. Remove snow buildup on a regular basis. If possible, store your boat under a canopy or in a garage.
  9. Check every few weeks. Repair any problem areas or components over the winter. Uncover and inspect your boat for new problems that might arise during storage. Check the battery to see if it is still charged. Remove any water that might have pooled in lower areas of the boat.
  10. Change the boat oil: Water that has gotten into the oil can corrode the engine. By changing the boat oil before storing you can avoid any long-term damage while stored.
  11. Freshen up to the Coolant System: Like the oil, draining and refreshing the coolant system with anti-freeze can prevent freezing and corrosion of the engine.
  12. Fill that tank: This may seem counterintuitive, but condensation can build up in an empty tank causing corrosion and even worse damage if it freezes. Add some gas and fuel stabilizer to make sure your tank is good to go during winter boat storage.
  13. Pay attention to the interior: Organic materials like canvas, leather, or other fabrics should be removed to avoid mold and mildew. And any electronics that could freeze should be removed to avoid damage.
  14. Wax on, wax off: This step is especially important for storing your boat outside during the winter. Cleaning your boat inside and out and finishing with wax will help prevent rust on your boat’s body.
  15. Always use a cover: Finally, covering your boat will protect from elements like dirt, dust, and moisture.

After your boat is all clean and ready for storage, head on over to FishAye Trading Company to commemorate your summer fishing adventures! Our fall hours are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 10am-5pm!

Whether you live in MA or you’re just visiting, these activities will help make your season special!

  1. The Emerald Necklace and Fall Foliage Tour, Boston, MA

From mid-October through early November, Boston’s Urban Adventours offers an over 15-mile-long bicycle tour of Boston’s green spaces. Stops include the Boston Common and Public Garden, the Charles River Esplanade, the Rose Kennedy Greenway, and more. Participants should be cyclists accustomed to spending four or more hours on their bicycles.

  1. Wellfleet Farmer’s Market, Wellfleet, MA

If you missed out on the summer beauty on the Cape, don’t let fall pass you by without a trip to the Wellfleet Farmer’s Market. Fall colors dazzle the wares, picked at their absolute peak. Local crafters display an array of products including natural soaps, hand woven rugs, fresh honey, homemade pies, and fudge.

  1. Salem Haunted Happenings, Salem, MA

Just north of Boston in Salem, the Salem Haunted Happenings runs throughout the month of October, and features everything witch-related-and more. Historical tours afford visitors a look at the graveyard where the real-life Salem witches are buried and a short production that details the Salem witch trials. Restaurants and bars feature fall specials on food and drinks to refuel before setting out on the witchcraft trail for part two. Maria’s Sweet Somethings offers “wicked good confections,” and they’re open until 11 p.m., which is well into those bewitching hours. Eclectic shops line the path for those needing a bit of retail therapy. The month-long celebration culminates in a huge street party on Halloween.

  1. King Richard’s Faire, Carver, MA

Carver, Massachusetts is home to King Richard’s Faire-New England’s oldest renaissance faire. The event is held weekends and Monday holidays from Sept. 3 through Oct. 23, and features a wealth of rides, skilled games, and shows-including jousting-on its 80-acre wooded site. Feast on spit-roasted turkey legs and hearty bowls of chowder or stew. Take home a treasure from the Artisan’s Marketplace.

  1. Flint Farm, Mansfield, MA

Fall means pumpkins-for both cooking and creating a festive display of harvest colors inside or outside your home. The perfect stop for picking up your pumpkins, gourds, and more is Flint Farm, located in Mansfield. Don’t leave without sampling their delicious made-in-Massachusetts ice cream.

  1. Nashoba Paddler Paddling Tours, Groton, MA

More Fish, More Fun! Planning a Successful Fishing Trip

By Fishing, Uncategorized

Happy June! Summer is right around the corner, and many people are already planning their Summer vacation trips. Fishing is a popular activity this season, especially if you’re going on a camping trip! Not sure where to start or what you need to pack for a successful fishing experience? No worries! We have some tips for you!

  1. Know your location. Knowing information about your chosen location is important in many different aspects, and can contribute to a safe and fun trip! Some examples may be: What is the weather forecast? What type of fish are in that area? Is the area generally busy with other fishermen? How are the water levels at your location?
  2. Hire a fishing guide. If it’s within your budget for your trip, hiring a guide is one of the most beneficial things you can do. Guides likely know all the best spots, and you’ll get to learn a ton of new information about the area.
  3. Pack good food. Do you need to bring food for all of your meals, or do you have dinner plans at a local spot? At the very least you should bring lots of water and high-quality snacks!
  4. Bring the right gear. It’s a good idea to have sunscreen, sunglasses, water storage and a first aid kit. In addition, consider bringing a camera, a backup rod, extra flies, and a waterproof layer in case of a turn in the weather! Don’t forget to prepare your gear before you leave for your trip!
  5. Know the rules and regulations. Be responsible and take the steps to get the proper fishing license before your trip. Many areas have catch and release only laws, barbless hook laws, artificial lures only, catch limits, size limits, and open and closed seasons. Make sure you know these rules, and follow them for the water bodies you’ll be visiting.

Never heard of Gyotaku Fish Art? Fish Rubbing originated in the Orient back in the early 1800′s. It has been used to preserve records of fisherman’s catches. As time has moved on, people have found the prints to be visually pleasing. The Art of Gyotaku is a delicate and ever-changing art form. The potential to create new and different works increase with each new design. Each fish rubbing is unique. The set up can be changed in a variety of ways. We can use a broad range of prints or inks. The printing stock can vary from the gentlest rice paper to a much firmer canvas. The basic method remains relatively simple. Apply paint or ink to the actual fish and lay your paper or canvas on top of it. Then rub over the entire fish and gently peel the paper off to have a look at your new creation. It is also a wonderful way to stay close to the ocean and appreciate the beauty and variety of marine life. Also, it is said that it brings good luck to the fisherman.
