Unique Items for Coastal Homes

By Fishing

Fishaye Trading Company is here to help you find items to decorate your coastal home. These aren’t just any items though, they are unique Gyotaku Fish Art pieces. Artist and owner, John Doherty, has his own method of Gyotaku. “First, I mix up paint or ink and then apply it directly on the fish. Next, I simply cover the fish with fine paper or fabric and gently rub.” The Gyotaku technique that is used allows accurate images of fish to be turned into art.

Fishaye produces a lot of different products using this technique. A broad range of prints and inks can be used on anything from fragile rice paper to a firm canvas.

Some of the products that Fishaye offers include:

  • Nautical Wall Art: All Gyotaku fish prints (collages, metal, and nautical prints) are IGEN prints on premium matte paper and some include a 1/8” thick clear acrylic and foamcore backing.
  • Trays: There are two different types: driftwood and melamine. Driftwood trays are made from genuine pieces of driftwood with two galvanized dock cleats as handles. Melamine trays are thick, dishwasher safe and excellent quality.
  • Tabletop Accessories: These whimsical tabletop accessories (bowls, placemats, boarder placemats, plates, and Sillipint cups) are all made with original Gyotaku artwork and will stand out in your house. These accessories allow a no-fuss clean up, so don’t worry about putting them away when guests come over.
  • Nautical Art Accessories: Just like all of the other products, these small home accessories (single light switch plates and notecards) also use the Gyotaku technique. Single light switch plates are made of metal with the lobster image baked in the and then sealed. They are sturdy, chip resistant, and perfect for any beach house. The unique notecards come in a variety pack with ten different images and include envelopes. These would be great to send to friends and family!

All of these products are made in the United States of America, off of the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Products that use wood are made with reclaimed cedar wood, so no trees are harmed in the creating of our work.

Fishing: Good for the Body & Soul

By Fishing

When you think of fishing, you no doubt have a preconceived vision of what it’s all about. Some see it as a sport or an obsession, while others see it as a hobby to do with friends or in solitude – no doubt accompanied by an adult beverage of your choice. It can be all those things, but did you know that it can be healing to your soul and beneficial to your body? No…well, let’s talk!

  • It has fitness benefits! Yes, it may not seem like much of a workout to cast your line and reel it back in – but do that for about two hours and you’ve given yourself a low-impact cardio workout without ever setting foot in a gym. Head down to the local pond and reel in a couple of fish. Once you get the hang of that, try more active techniques like fly fishing. Up for a real challenge? Try your hand at pelagic fishing offshore for the full body work out!
  • Fresh air detoxifies our lungs. Spending time in nature with a fishing pole fills our lungs with clean air that is rich with oxygen.
  • Being around water is especially good for you. This is because moving water produces negative ions, tiny charged particles that have been shown to boost the immune system, increase metabolism, and regulate your sleep patterns.
  • A boost of Vitamin D. That’s right – being out in the sunshine can also boost your immune system and your mood. But, don’t forget the sunscreen!
  • Unplug…we live in a fast-paced, app-filled world where focusing on one thing has never been more of a challenge. Fishing has a mindful, meditative effect on the brain. According to a 2012 study, even a single trip can improve short-term concentration. Repeated sessions can build up a person’s attention span more permanently, helping them do better in education, work, and generally throughout their lives.

Other added benefits are making time to spend with buddies, eating healthier (if you’re taking your catch of the day home!) and bonding with your family on fishing trips.

So, there you have it! It may all sound like the biggest fish story you’ve every heard, but give it a try. Throw caution to the wind, take a day off and cast that line – what do you have to lose?

How to Spruce Up Your Space!

By Art

Choosing the right artwork for your home is an important task. After all, you spend most of your time in your living space – whether it’s a condo, apartment or house. You want décor that lets you express yourself and makes you feel at peace in body and soul. Sound deep? It doesn’t have to be! We have put together some tips for helping you choose the right art with no stress – it really just comes down to a few practical approaches to get started.

First and foremost, determine the amount of space you have. Get out the tape measure and take account of your wall space that you want to fill. Decide whether you would like one large accent piece – which can make a huge impact – or several smaller pieces to create a gallery wall. Most people opt for the latter and a gallery wall can definitely enhance your space by choosing a strong color palette. Take note of the furniture, wall coloring and other décor in your home and select art with styles and colors that compliment them.

Speaking of color – that’s step two! Use color to make certain areas in your home “pop”, as they say. If you have a room with mostly earth tones, maybe use your artwork to add a splash of vibrant color like red or purple. In a room with several patterns and textures, you might want to choose a more subtle piece of art.

And, finally, the last step is just to have fun with it! Mix styles and colors together in wild abandon or stick to a genre and palette that you’re comfortable with. There is no right or wrong in art. And, remember, sometimes the art chooses you. If you feel drawn to a particular print, take a chance and buy it! You’ll figure the rest out later. There is always a place for a piece of art – you just have to find it.
