San Juan Islands– Here, instead of palm trees and tropical fish, there are forests filled with pine trees and the sea life includes killer whales! Located in the Pacific Northwest, each island and town has a distinct charm of its own.

Chesapeake Bay– It is almost 200 miles long and up to 30 miles wide. About half of the Bay is in Maryland and the other half is in Virginia. Rockfish fishing is popular, but any kind of boating is common.

South Florida– From Fort Lauderdale all the way through the Florida Keys to the Key West, fishing is extremely popular. The eastern coast is a common place for center console fishing boats.

Due to the different types of saltwater fish and number of saltwater fishing tips and techniques that can be applied, learning all the tricks when it comes to how to saltwater fish can be a challenge for both seasoned anglers and beginners.

Just remember, the types of fishing tackle and gear that is used for saltwater fishing differs considerably based on the species and the specific fishing techniques that are applied. Other saltwater fishing tips to keep in mind:

  1. Make sure to have a valid saltwater fishing license.
  2. Check a local tide chart when planning your inshore saltwater fishing trip. One of the most important inshore fishing tips is to plan your trips based on tidal movement.
  3. Choose the right spinning rod and reel combo. Start out with a 7-foot, medium weight spinning rod and reel combo that’s rated for 10 to 20-pound test line.
  4. Use live or natural baits or your favorite fishing lures. Natural baits, such as shrimp or baitfish, offer you the best opportunity for consistent action.
  5. Make sure to keep your live bait in a covered bucket or in a live well.
  6. Consider fishing from a public pier to start. Public piers are great places to gain experience with inshore saltwater fishing gear, rigging baits, and landing fish.
  7. When practicing catch and release, keep your catch out of the water only as long as you can hold your own breath.

Boat Cleaning

Clean Boat, Clear Mind

To be able to keep your boat clean you need to be able to consider everything that could come in contact with you when out on the water. Prepare for everything from algae to jumping fish and everything in-between. Fortunately, it is possible to keep your boat clean with these cleaning tips and supplies.

  • Start the clean with a hose to remove any loose dirt on both the inside and outside. A trick is to start at the highest point of whatever you are cleaning so that later the dirty water won’t wash over something that you have cleaned already.
  • Use soap specifically made for cleaning boats. Other household soaps have pH balances that can damage the boat surfaces.
  • Use a mitt or soft brush to clean small areas at a time and rinsing it immediately. Dried soap can be almost as bad as dirt on the surface of your boat. Never scrub too rough or hard, there is a chance you will scratch the surface.
  • For a final rinse, remove any nozzle-type piece from the hose and let the water run down the sides of the boat to help prevent beading and water spots.
  • When drying, use a highly-absorbent towel on all spots that you washed. Using a towel like this pays off in the long run with streak-fee finishes.
  • Buff the surface and then follow the directions for your wax and sealant.

Summer: A Fly Fishers’ Favorite Season

We all fish for different reasons, whether its to get away or to have an excuse for a fun day, but we all share one primary goal; catch fish.  No matter where you are in your fly-fishing journey there is always room for improvement and learning new tactics.  You maybe a pro or a beginner but if you follow this framework, you can improve your fly-fishing skills and become a better angler.  There is no better time to start than now!

  • The Fly Fishing Equation: Location + Fly Selection + Presentation = Catch Fish. This may seem very obvious and simple, but even the best can forget the basics.  The main issue arises when the fisherman focuses on only one part of the equation instead of factoring in all variables.  For example, focusing too much on the presentation of the hook or trying to find the perfect fly can cost you a lot of time and missed fish.  Balance is the most repeated trend in fly fishing for a reason, it is the most important!
  • Location: There are dozens of variables that make up what makes for a good location for fly-fishing.  These variables are as follows: environmental factors, streamflows, river factors, and water factors.  Environmental factors focus on the desired catch of the day, water temperatures, and insect life. Streamflows focus on the historical data of the certain body of water you have chosen and how the highs and lows of water can affect your catch.  River and water factors focus on the ability to read the water and make a cast based on the information gathered.
  • Fly Selection: If you do not know the 13 major categories of insects that trout eat start studying now! The 13 are as follows: Midges, Mayflies, Caddis, Stoneflies, Scuds, Snowbugs, Hoppers, Ants, Beetles, Annelids, Damselflies, Dragonflies, and Water Boatman.
  • Presentation: This is where all of your hard work finally comes together. Your main focus of the presentation should be the right set-up, the cast, and the drift. The right set-up changes with every day and every fishing spot.  The cast is choosing the correct position to throw your line and disguise it as an insect.  The drift is factoring in the water movement to make your fly presented naturally.

The next time you set out on a fly-fishing trip, try to remember this framework and impress everyone with the amount of fish you catch!

As time has moved on, people have found the prints to be visually pleasing.The Art of Gyotaku is a delicate and ever-changing art form. Unique Items for Coastal Homes

Fishaye Trading Company is here to help you find items to decorate your coastal home. These aren’t just any items though, they are unique Gyotaku Fish Art pieces. Artist and owner, John Doherty, has his own method of Gyotaku. “First, I mix up paint or ink and then apply it directly on the fish. Next, I simply cover the fish with fine paper or fabric and gently rub.” The Gyotaku technique that is used allows accurate images of fish to be turned into art.

Fishaye produces a lot of different products using this technique. A broad range of prints and inks can be used on anything from fragile rice paper to a firm canvas.

Some of the products that Fishaye offers include:

  • Nautical Wall Art: All Gyotaku fish prints (collages, metal, and nautical prints) are IGEN prints on premium matte paper and some include a 1/8” thick clear acrylic and foamcore backing.
  • Trays: There are two different types: driftwood and melamine. Driftwood trays are made from genuine pieces of driftwood with two galvanized dock cleats as handles. Melamine trays are thick, dishwasher safe and excellent quality.

When you think of fishing, you no doubt have a preconceived vision of what it’s all about. Some see it as a sport or an obsession, while others see it as a hobby to do with friends or in solitude – no doubt accompanied by an adult beverage of your choice. It can be all those things, but did you know that it can be healing to your soul and beneficial to your body? No…well, let’s talk!
